Hi All,
Well the 2018 SRC kicked off last Tuesday 24th with the first round held at SSME and as I could not make it my roving reporter Neil Bolton sent me some pics and his observations to enable me to put together this report in absentia.
I also got some feedback from Darryl during the week as we tuned our model car for the MCN to be held in May – never ever thought I would build a model racing car complete with lights (as opposed to a SLOT CAR).
So here goes. Twelve entries was a great turn-out for this popular series and when you consider that Ron pulled out to make it just 2 rounds of six and that Stoo and myself could not make it – well it bodes well for the remaining rounds.
I will proceed with our man’s comments from the front line (in italics) adding whatever I can.
Hey Fox
Just some observations from last night.
As you will see by the results it was a cracking night. The totals were a little low but overall most thought the racing was fast and close.
CanAm
Heat 1
Cars and Drivers Left – Right
Ando, Troy, Wayne W, Shalin, Stevo and Andrew
Troy pretty much led all the way. Andrew overcame a slow start to finish a solid P2. Shalin duked it out in his first visit to SSME. Wayne Walker was a bit unlucky, striking car trouble in the last bracket when challenging for the heat lead.
Heat 2
Cars and Drivers Left – Right
Casey, Neil, Gregg, Richard, Darryl and Wayne B
My car was hooked up pretty good and I drove the wheels of it, but couldn't make an impression on the podium. Troy came out of the other heat to knock me back to P5.
Darryl got involved in someone else's wreck late in the last bracket and it surely cost him the win. Overall there was FA in the podium. King Richard was impressive in his first run on the track.
Overall Gregg defended his title in the best possible way, by winning.
Talking to Darryl the other day it was clear that he was robbed – taken out in the bank and then marshalled last – s...t happens sometimes but that’s racing. He set fastest time on all lanes but was beaten by 2.6 seconds in the end.
Gregg’s lap total was 1 lap down on Steve Kings 148 which Steve has achieved twice – I am not sure if anybody has done more in these races as I missed a few of them due to travel. Maybe if anybody has information of a higher total recorded they could let us know who and when for the record.
Darryl’s fast time of 4.660 fell short of the 4.595 done by Steve King in round 1 last year and the faster 4.576 set by Ric's Raiders in last year’s Enduro however his times overall were bullet quick (Troy had a 4.222 recorded on Red which was obviously a short lap or some other glitch).
Great to see Troy back and Shalin being weaned off the wing things for the night.
GT1
Heat 1
Cars and Drivers Left – Right
Ando, Troy, Wayne W, Shalin, Stevo and Andrew
All the way for Troy here and in the process set a smoking time on Green of 3.982 (anybody have a faster time on record?).
From the sheets I can see that Stevo and Andrew Baxter both hit trouble.
Heat 2
Cars and Drivers Left – Right
Casey, Wayne B, Gregg, Richard, Darryl and Neil
My sled was a bit of handful and it showed in the results.
Ron used last year’s results to seed the heat line up. It would have been good to have Troy competing against Richard and Daryl in the same heat, but it was not to be. However that should be corrected in the next round.
Richard completed an impressive first run with a victory.
Daryl's karma got re-balanced when with his gear slowly stripping, he made it to the finish for P2. The popular theory was that the car would stop before the end of the race.
Shalin had an up and down race learning the track.
Good win for Richard but short of the 173 lap effort from Stoo in the 2nd round last year (again if any greater total exists let us know).
In summery a great night which I was sad to miss – a big thanks to the SSME crew and Ron in particular for hosting the event.

Thanks Mark for pulling the report together.
Taking the risk of repeating myself, it was a great night of racing, with two very deserving winners.
Looking forward to the HSC round hopefully with even more starters.
My Gt1 motor finally gave it away at the following Friday race at HSC. I purchased it from Wayne when his track was running. I ran it in Group F Wing Cars at Wayne's ( including a couple of wins) and all last year in GT1. I picked up a couple of more motors over that time, but none were quicker. Not looking forward to the process of finding a replacement. Is the latest batch any more consistent?

Would one or two of you nice gentlemen mind pacing out the length & width of that building you are in, why you might ask, well it looks to be a good size that can hold a track of a good length and as a group of us would like to build something along those lines.

Hi Trophy
The best guy to answer your question would be Ron Griffin. He is on the committee at Luddenham and looks after the Slot Car track. I am sure he could tell you the dimensions to the last mm.
He is on this forum occasionally, so a PM would be the go.
