Round 4 HSC CanAm 09

Post by Mark Fox »

Hi All,

A quick update on the results for the 4th race in the HSC Can Am series held on 28th March 2009.

There were only 6 starters in this round which was disappointing but a fine time was held by the racers attending in any event.

With limited entrants the race format was to be qualifying (just for the fun of it) to be followed by 2 heats of 3 racers (4 minutes per lane) with 3 marshals - the totals then deciding the overall placings.

Firstly qualifying: -

Wayne Bramble 4.944
James Colefax 4.972
Mark Fox 4.991
Ivan Levonic 5.262
Steve Hutchesson 5.296
Troy Boldy (did not qualify as he was late)

The first heat was led start to finish by James with his Warmack kit (assembled by Wayne) followed by Ivan (driving one of Steve's cars as a loaner) and then Steve.

The second heat had a little more fluctuation with Mark leading for the first 2 brackets whilst Troy took the lead from 3rd to 7th bracket - Wayne pulled out the stops and took the lead in the final bracket.

Troy (the current NSW Title holder) was looking good going into the last bracket with a 3 lap break on Wayne BUT Wayne was finishing on the super quick Orange lane whilst Troy was finishing on the dreaded (at least by me) Black lane.

Troy drove really well to post 44 laps on Black but to no avail as Wayne posted a superb 48 laps on Orange to pip Troy by a lap in the final analysis.

The final placings and laps: -

Wayne Bramble 358
Troy Boldy 357
James Colefax 352
Mark Fox 349
Ivan Levonic 331
Steve Hutchesson 310

Mark,

Thanks for posting a report, and photo's.

Shame about the roll up, but sounds like some tight racing.

Interesting slab you have there. And quick too.

Great report Fox, shame a few more people didn't turn up but it was still both fun and useful to run the limited race as it allowed me to test out a new idea with a car. I gave the race tested one to Ivan as he is a fast reliable driver and he drove it very well. Unfortunately the motor had gone off just a little bit otherwise he may have scared a few people.

The new car was almost a good one but a bit too frail, I was trying out fixed pans soldered to the rails but after pranging it a few times the front of the pans bent and it started to handle very unreliably. I think I left Troy with a case of RSI marshalling at the end of the straight. I have retired the car but will reuse its rails and back bracket later as that part of it works fine. New design car is a bit more than half finished.

I think it's Great Ivan had such Fun with Your Car !!

Hey Ivan,....More than Happy for you to Run/Try/Race one of My cars as well,.. ;)

But one would Have to suggest a 'Hutcho' car is pretty Damn Cool !!,.. :D :D

As I have Often recalled,..;
As a Youngster at Waitara at one of My Very Early Races,..I Drove one of Hutchos Cars around the Old Flat Track at Waitara,..and it was an experience that has Lived with me Until this day.

It had one of His HUGE Long Stack Hand Wound Early Mura Can Motors which Had SO Much 'Grunt',..it Literally 'Leapt' out of Corners !!,..a Truly Awesome Car,..ahh,..but the there was the Glendale Car, Oh and One at Parramatta,.....and ,.... !!!,..lol

Ahh such Memories !!!,..Thanks Hutch :D

stooo,

I particularly like the car of yours that I drove up at Peter's track at Tuggerah, I had not learnt how to drive a control that had an adjustable brake pot in it back then so I was not driving the car to its peak performance but it was a very smooth fast car so I am sure you could find a decent driver that wanted to drive a great car if you bothered.

I think Wayne would get really suspicious if I turned up for a Retro race with a Mura "A" can and a 24 guage long stack in it. I doubt its possible anyway as the Parma inline gears are nothing like strong enough for motors that produced that scale of torque.

I would like to see Ivan do a bit more development on his own car as I have both raced against it and driven it recently and its a very good handling car. His design is original and it is well constructed and I think all it needs is a new Plafit motor and a bit higher gearing and he would get it down around the 5 second mark in qualifying.

Oh Yes,..Not suggesting that either Ivan's car Was/Is No Good or anything,...More a Case of Driving another Car as Comparison to Your Own and Others,..etc

Always good to have a Yard-stick as such.

Go on,...chuck a New motor at it Ivan !!

I liked driving hutch's full sidewinder at Parramatta, I think after a Matich race. Was the smoothest thing I had ever driven thur the esse's.

Also ran one in an enduro at Parramatta on the Pre-Villawood track.

Still remember those 2 balistic things at Chester Hill, Steven Anstis ran one.

Chester Hill was always fun, Noel Shaw's track was an unusual layout with the hill climb aspect but the track was also rough in terms of its surface and you had to wind motors specific to the track, usually about .490 long stacks and a lot of advance. I remember doing a sprint there and the car was fast but I got spiked by Fred Slowe (Steve Best's step father) under the hill section and he hit it that hard he managed to break a strong car.

Those big sidewinders were good cars to drive, the characteristic of a straight sidewinder made them very tidy in the middle and exit of corners but they were always fussy on corner entry and you had to brake accurately or you could flip them. Their real win was you could put a lot of power down very efficiently because of the exact weight transfer on both tires on acceleration but the down side was you could sky them out of corners if you were not careful.

I ran my share of anglewinders through the early 70s as they had their advantages on some tracks but the straight sidewinders had characteristics that anglewinders did not have, thats why I ran them much longer than most people.
