Actually Lindsay, that was during a race, Nats final in 1987 (I think Wayne won it).
It was done during a lane break just before I was about to go on that particular lane AND it was in the middle of the doughnut, naturally the car stopped there every lap until continual "scraping" of about 1/16th" of rubber cement on top of the braid by the marshal pushing the car finally enabled me to run a few laps towards the end of the bracket.
Didn't help my chances, probably lost around 80 laps due to the track fault / coagulated glue on top of the braid (no rerun allowed etc).
