Retro's, Falcons and a Big Track,..

Hey guys,..

Whilst thoroughly enjoying myself at HSC last Night, along with all the Other HSC 'Loyals' :) , that turned up to the Pre Xmas get together / Rental Car / Vintage Races and Pizza and Trophies etc.

In free time after the Races, I thought,..Heck Why not 'Bash' that Falcon7 in to my Retro CanAm and see what it's Like!

WELL,..One Would Have to suggest that the Choice of 'CheetahII' motor for the 'Aussie Retro' CanAm and F1 classes,..Especially for around the Little 110' Road course,..as a VERY WISE decision !!!,..lol

Cody and I were thinking Just How Bad the Carnage would be, with 8 x Cars, so Eqiupped !!
Sure, the Gearing 8:29 I think, may Not have been too perfect, but the Car was Waay Overpowered for That Track,..but Faaaast.

So we figured let's have a Run around the 'Big' Track,...Well,..With the Falcon7, one would have to suggest it Makes for as similar 'Experience' as CheetahII's do on the Flat track !!!

Fantastic!!

We, (Cody, Wayne and Myself) did quite a few laps on Orange and White and found the car easily 'lapped' at around the 5.5 to 5.4 sec bracket!

The Motor DID Get a bit warm,..But Falcon7's DO, (although this one may Not have been all that Great), so getting the gearing right may be a bit tricky.

Perhaps Next Year, we run One or Two Races for Both F1's and CanAm's on the Big Track, (with Falcon7's or perhaps 'ProSlot 'Puppy Dog' motors on the Big Track), just for the Heck of it and to Have a Change !!

RudyG of Slick7, has often suggested his New 'Mini-Brute' motor could be useful as well and is certainly 'Cheap',..(Must Try one!),..

Anyway,..just a Few Ideas,..like Maybe building ,..an AngleWinder/sidewinder.

Personally,..I always Kinda Figured,..something along the Lines of the 'Stock Cars' that the 'Yanks' run, with 4.5" WB's, might have been Good on the Big Track,..Being 'Banked' 'n all. Plus there ARE Plenty of 'Liveries' available from That Era !!!

Just some Ideas !!!

Ofcourse,..the Other Idea,..could in fact I guess 'Follow On' from 'Hutcho's Ideas,...

Mark Keeps saying to me,..Build an Anglewinder,..I Will,...Wayne Will and so will Hutcho,..etc,...so,..I Guess That is an Option,..although, to be Honest I am Unsure what to Call it or What Rules to follow,..I know Hutcho has his Ideas and Preferences,..probably So do Others,..BUT, as Much as I Can understand,..the Idea of Perhaps Running Tiny, Small Front and Rear Wheels, etc,..One Can't help but Feel,..well atleast from the Guys that Race Locally,..and Arguably people who 'Observe' as First Timers,..that if we can Keep them looking 'Recognisable' and perhaps even a Bit More 'Real' ,..Will certainly Help!!

If one asks what IS the Biggest form of Interest in Slotting,..it IS 1/32 Plastic Cars and a LOT of that Interest, is because they Look,..shall we say,..Recognisable !!

Retro's have in a Similar Fashion as the Plafit CanAm's to Look a Heck of a Lot Better than Many currently Do!

In Reality, for What the 'Spirit' of Retro is about That is Just as OK and 'Cool' / 'Sano', as a Fully Replicated Concours Car, but seeing as Many of the Other Racers who either have or Could enjoy Retro's,..Please DO Understand, that any attempts at Scale Realism, are Most Certainly encouraged !!

To that end, I have posted some possibly useful 'Reference' pics and links (which I and others may add to), on CanAm's and other stuff in the Model Car Racing section.

I just Figure as we Now have Quite a Bunch of People who Have Retro Cars and have Raced, we Have the 'theoretical' possibility of having some Quite Large fields next Year,..if we can Ever manage to get Everyone at HSC at the same time !!

Plus after the relative success of the GT1/Retro Cross City Championship, Thatb is something that I am sure with slightly Better Promotion etc,..could Prove to be a really Good Inter Track Series !!

Anyway,..any Ideas are Obviously More than Welcome,..there are currently NO Changes whatsoever 'Planned' as such for Next year,..Just possible Ideas.

Well, you could follow either "D3" Retro Pro, or IRRA Retro Anglewinder on page 19.

Hmmm,..Yes ofcourse,..I Guess,..but wouldn't that Lead us down the Same path we went before,..??,..lol

Strange really, I don't actually HAVE a Problem with the Current Retro/D3 Wheel sizes. I was in Fact a 'Bit Dismayed' by the Choice to allow and Run 'Smaller' Front and Rear Tyres in F1 Retro,..BUT, as HSC had Plenty of Rather Nice and somewhat accurately Marked Wide Fronts, and as smaller rears would allow people to continue using Tyres/wheels from their CanAm's etc,..But although to Many it May 'Represent' what Was raced here at some Times,..I Really don't want to end up with Flexi-Car like Front Wheels and Tiny EuroSport like Rears !!!

You Know along these lines and as we had chatted about 'Vintage',..to Me the Vintage guys Should ALL have been Running 'Jail Door' Cars !!!,..lol

Do you Reckon the Scale/Vintage guys might be interested in That kind of Thing,..Along with Suitable Bodies etc??

Anyway,..If we don't decide, it Won't Happen, which is OK as well, as the Racing of Late HAS Been Exceptional, so even IF the Numbers aren't always Great, The racing Has been!

Don't want to 'Mess That Up',.. :D

Well...probably, but isn't it always the same when you start out with a workable set of regs, then someone says "What if we......" or "Why don't we....." build an anglewinder or something.

That's pretty much how the Retro Pro came about, then Retro Anglewinder.

The motor builders felt left out, and wanted to have a class to fiddle with the motors, then that lead on to the anglewinder being a better platform for the hotter mills. And then the Retro anglewinder class morfed into the early 70's style of pro car, except for the aero bodywork.

Maybe come up with a set of regs, either modified D3 or IRRA, or similar to what Fox or Hutcho suggested, build a few cars, and show people what they are like. If people are interested, they will want to join in. That's how Dale, Dean and I started with Retro CanAm.

And as you say, the Retro racing of late has been great, and you don't want to mess that up.

Jail Doors could be great for the 'Vintage' guys except there are only a couple who are scratch builders, so there is an immediate problem. Unless someone is prepared to build a stack of frames for sale, then it won't happen.

So what do you reckon about Motors ??

I guess as the Anglewinders Should Handle Pretty Well,..Any Ideas on Motors ??

On the Flat Track,..Something with Perhaps Just A Bit more 'Grunt/Power/Poke', whatever lol would be Nice, but personally I reckon at this Stage a Falcon7 might Not be the Go,..They DO get Hot AND they Don't Last Mearly as Long as a CheetahII as far as I'm aware,..so That's an issue for some, if not many,...lol

I'd actually like to try the Blue Avant Slot motor,..with one fitted to a Sprit Peugeot sedan, around HSC, it's Easily THE Quickest Plastic car I have EVER Driven !!,..As Bevan can also attest as he aslo drove it,..Must get one and experiment.!!

ofcourse THE Other Problem, is That apart from the aforementioned and perhaps a few Others I doubt Anyone Will Buils an anglewinder, as IMHO, they are even Harder for a Novice to Build and end up with a Good car!

There Are ofcourse Slick7 kits I guess,.... :D

The "D3" and IRRA regs seem to work OK in the USA, although numbers have dropped off a bit, so I'd suggest start with their motors;
"D3" RetroPro
* Falcon 1 to 7 - unmodified.
* TSR D3 - unmodified.
* Pro Slot PS4002, with std Chinese arm.
Allowed modifications only on the PS4002:
-Motor screws to hold end bell, ball bearings, shunt wires.
-Allowed armatures: Pro-Slot X12 or lesser armatures (I.E. "Puppy Dog", "Big Dog"...)

IRRA Retro Anglewinder
* Falcon 7 - unmodified.
* TSR D3 - unmodified.
* Pro Slot PS4002, with std Chinese arm.
* Pro Slot PS4002B, with American arm.

BUT, as we have done with the CanAm, we elected to go with the Cheetah II for our local racing. Same goes here with the anglewinder, if we think another motor is more suitable to our local scene, then go with it. Thing is tho, the motor to be used should be readily available, reasonably priced, and controlable as far as tampering/teching is concerned. ie, why would you use any other motor, than those already listed? What advantages would it offer?

Yes,..I agree.

You know,..I AM quite happy for things to remain as they are,..I Am just bashing ideas around.

It IS a slight dilemna with motors,..as the CheetahII,m Has proven to be Very Even 'across the board' and has certainly given us extremely good 'mileage',..heck Dale has Only Now fitted a new Motor,..to his Original race winning car !!! and it is still competitive!!
