Hi All,

I notice that there are Aussie Retro F1 races scheduled for the Retro Nats and NSW Title races.

Can anybody refer me to the construction regulations for this class as I have not seen any.

How many people have seen a Sunset B196 body too?

and a B196 being ??

a 1996 benneton F1

comes with built-in and seperate rear wing to make a 3 element.

Ahh,..Yeah,..I thought you may have meant a Benneton,..the referemnce to 'Retro' being ???,..or are ya just trying to find a Body?

Well, by rights, if we are to follow the path of our Can-Am regs, we should be using these IRRA regs and vary them for our local preferences with regard to;
a/ Motor - Cheetah II only
b/ IRRA List + local bodies if available
c/ No ball race bearings

Yes,..as I was suggesting to Mark,..presumably, as with the adoption of the IRRA Rule set for CanAm, the F1 Rule Set is also OK,..sort of,..

To be Honest,..I'd be quite Happy to Have 'BOTH' D3 and IRRA style F1's run.

The differences are subtle, but Quite Major, in some aspects.

I guess My biggest 'whinge' about the IRRA rules, (whilst I DO like the chassis width !!,..lol), is the 'Preclusion' of ANY Other 'Chassis Bits' being exposed, Other than Axle Tubes.

To be Honest, Some form of 'Piano Wire/brass construct', supporting the Front Wheels and shall we suggest, 'Aiding' in the Look of Front Suspension, could and I believe Should be seen as an attempt to make the car Look more realistic !!

Plus,..as we all know, with the Cars Also being Wider, Traffic and Passing will be a Careful 'Art' and IMHO, Wide "Exposed" Unsupported Front Wheels like on IRRA F1's, are a Recipe for Plenty of Race Damaged Chassis and front ends !!

When F1's come together,..They often have Big accidents !!,..

With the Two F1's Rules having different Chassis widths, it May allow many different Chassis designs to effectively Run Together !! ??

sorry guys. me = mixing up scale and retro's again. a Sunset B196 will fit straight on a plafit F1 chassis anyway.

Now, retro F1. the Lotus "wedge" (eagle), BRM, and Honda are available from Bob. He might even have others!! ??

Both IRRA & D3 overall width are 3.25" (82.55mm) accross the outside of the tyres/wheels.

It's only the body width that changes.
IRRA = 1-5/8" (41.28mm)
D3 = 1-3/8" (34.92mm)

If we followed IRRA, then 'D3' legal cars could also run.

In any case, we can pen our own regs for our preferences.

Hey Steve,..as to the Width Overall,..IO Know,..that is what I was referring to in regard to them being Wider and passing etc being slightly more tricky !!!

As Noted, there atre Two different chassis widths,..BUT, the D3 rules allow for a 'Defined' area of Brass/piano wire to extend beyond the chassis limits at the Front.

As you say,..we Can always Cook up our Own version,..and after chatting with Fox, He with James, and Myself with Wayne,..it sounds like we shall do Exactly That,..and have a sort of 'Marriage' of the Two Rule sets,..thereby allowing Quite a bit of Freedom chassis wise

As to bodies,..well HSC has both RedFox (although ONLY in 7 thou), and Outisight F1's.

I think they probably have Painted F1 bodies available as well,..check with James or Wayne

TrueScale has SUPERBLY Moulded examples of Both the older Lancer and Dynamic Ferraris, Matra, Lotus 49 and the Lotus 56 Indy Wedge !! (althouh the latter is NOT Currently listed). http://www.truescaleproducts.com/

Betta and Classic also have a few suitable Bodies as well.

The 'Thing' with the 'Patto' bodies, is that they are made from PETG, which, inn My opinion, with these cars, speeds and track, would be somewhat unsuitable, as they would be both Heavy and Fragile,..compared to 10thou Lexan !! In fact I would Venture the 7thou RedFox bodies may also be wee bit 'Fragile', in that they may end up quite 'scrappy' after a hard race.

The TrueScale 10thou CanAm bodies I have run, along with Fox, have proven to be VERY Durable !! The Short and Long 'Kirby' Ti-22's capable of lasting a Whole Season !!

If we Include the Bodies in Both D3 and IRRA along with Local variants and Possibilities,..we Could end up with quite a varied Field of cars,..although I wouldn't be surprised if Coopers and ferraris Dominate !!

Fox and I have Our Lotus Indy 'Wedges' !!,..:),..Perfect for Scooping Errant cars out of the way !!,..rofl

Hey,..as well,..are we thinking of allowing 'Ball Bearing' Rear Ends as Well ??,..peronally can't see why Not.


EDIT: Well actually, after having a look, there Aren't that many 'suitable' F1 betta bodies, although, with a 'Narrow' chassis, a McLaren 'Fan' could use one of these M7a's !! Always Loved those cars,..I seem to recall owning one or two of the Lancer or Dynamic versions Waaaay back,...

Thanks Steve for your link to those F1 rules. I have been discussing a number of options with Wayne, and we liked the NorCal D3 F1 rules. In any event, we are still in the developmental stages of this new class and it will be a while before we commit to any formal club format at HSC. There are however, a few changes we would like to offer, namely the ability to run a smaller/wider front wheel setup on the 3/32nd axle similar to the JK Goodyear Eagles. The dimensions would be 3/32 X .690" X .475" or thereabouts, but you can still use the standard fronts (like the Canam ones) part #JK8745D3. Additions to the USA body list are: OS-430 Cooper F1, 434N Ferrari, 432N Ferrari, 431 Lotus 49, 433N Matra; Red Fox- RFD317C Lotus, RFD318C Cooper and RFD319C Ferrari. The bodies we have in stock for the main part. I also have the S7-627 and JKD3F101 chassis kits in stock. The Slick7 is $45.00 ($75.00 assembled), the JK is $55.00 ($85.00 assembled). Maximum chassis width is 1 5/8". Cheetah II motor. Rear tires Alpha #6138 and JK8713P (.790 minimum). All other running gear and chassis material as per the US D3F1 regs. Rules are intended to provide guidelines for racers and are not used as a means for oppression or exclusion from any race event at HSC (within reason). If you show up with a less than perfect car for the first event, we are not going to disqualify you for making the effort of building one up. The next round for Aussie Retro is Saturday October 24th, Canam starts at 7:30pm (free practice @ 7:00pm), F1 straight after.

(Just a reminder, that we are not allowed to use the term "D3" as it is owned by Paul Sterret and for use only in official "D3" races.)

I had a quick squiz at the HSC website, and found the Can Am regs after a bit of searching, but nothing on the F1.

Any chance of sharing them here, or posting a link if there is?
