Hi All
Well the 2nd round of the HSC 2017 Retro series saw us convened to battle it out on the big track (BTR – Big Track Retro).
Eight entries including a new face at HSC – welcome Ray who had built a couple of cars to join the Retro fray - so 2 races of 4 apiece was the format.

The combined sheet shows Gregg led all the way but it was close given that Matthew, myself and Brad were only a lap down at the half-way mark. I dropped back another lap after a bad run on purple whilst Matthew eventually pipped Brad by only 3.055 secs.

This race was pretty much Mathews affair as he led all the way and finished 5 laps up on me in 2nd closely followed by Brad, Gregg and Joe. Joe was right in the mix but a bent front axle slowed him down a little and cost him on White and Red lanes.

Joe set fastest time on Blue in the last bracket with a 5.723 to top his time of 5.725 on Purple in his first bracket and was also fastest on Black. Mathew was quickest on Green, Yellow, Orange and White while I got the fast time on Red much to my own amazement.
See you all on the Flat Track - 8th April.

Judging by the way he pasted us I think we both should be looking at Matt's car

Quick..... somebody bend me up a Z rail. I can't break my one bend per wire rule.

I like to adhere to that rule also - sometimes 2 bends must be done
However have a close look at Matt's car - NO bends - maybe that's why it's so fast

Sorry I thought it was one of Justin's Bonehead chassis

It is a 'Bone head, but the "Z-Railness" comes from Straight Flat 'rails' alternatively soldered together

Yup it's a Bonehead.
There are two ways to make a 'Z" Rail
Here is a Tony P/Brian Warmack take: -

Try bending up those little suckers
Jasons' 'Bonehead' uses straight rails to get a similar - easier to build result: -
- 3-28-20170304_190213 - Copy (2).jpg (55.97 KiB) Viewed 13701 times
The outside rail is attached to the rear bracket whilst the inside two are soldered together with a stop interacting with the bracket to limit the movement.
- 5-28-20170304_190213.jpg (15.15 KiB) Viewed 13701 times
At the front the two outside rails are soldered together and the inside rail is attached to the nose of the chassis.

If i was going to build one guess which system I would use
Also note that Jason's goes the opposite way to the bent rail version - his outside rails go to the bracket and inside to the nose whereas the Tony P version does the opposite - it doesn't matter which way its done but by doing this Jason has been able to use a hole in the bracket together with the wire on top of the two inside rails as his movement limiter - nice building.
Note that the bent rail version is not movement limited at the rear like Jasons which would make it really floppy IMO.
Hope this is useful Neil - if you want to build one I am happy to help

Thanks Mark,
You have cleared it up for me. The Bonehead has been a very successful design, albeit piloted by some talented drivers.
It has some merit and I am thinking its time for a new sled, so maybe it is the way to go.
Talk to you at STR in April.

How do neil,Why dont you build from ajk kit.You dont have to bend anything and hell, you dont even have to solder much.Regards Brad.

Ha Ha Brad
A compelling argument to build a JK.

Hi Neil. The thing with Justins Z rails is being a GO-KART racer he builds them to lift the inside wheel,,same as a Kart.On other chassis we get a nice little power slide through the corner. This is all down to the solid axle.Lifting the inside wheel is a bit duanting unless your used to it.I think Leigh also adopts the same method beig a Kart man himself.Hope this helps.BRAd.
