Hi All.

Well the last round of Retro Racing at HSC was held last Saturday (10th December) on the Big Track.

Going into the last round the interest relating to the point-score was mainly as to who would take out 3rd spot in CanAm and F1 as I led Brad by a single point in CanAm and by 2 points in F1.

James had a clear lead (141 to 133) over Darryl for CanAm whilst Darryl had a 7 point lead (141 to 134) over James in F1 and so I assumed that these positions would not change in all probability.

The night saw the same 7 stalwarts as competed in the previous race at HSC which was the 2nd round of the NSW Retro Championships. The same format was applied with 2 heats of 3 and 4.

CanAm

Race 1 comprised Brad, Joe, Neil and Matthew.

Well Mathew stormed off into the distance leaving the rest of the field in his dust for an all the way win and very hot total of 164 laps.

Joe and Brad battled for the minor podium spots with Brad having his way for 2nd as he pulled away slowly but surely from the 4th bracket on while Neil played a very consistent hand to place just 1 lap out of the places.

Race 2 comprised Darryl, James and myself.

Matthew’s total of 164 was always going to be a tough target. James and I set off at a great rate to battle it out while Darryl brought up the rear this time.

We were very evenly matched but James superior driving got him across the line in the last bracket as I had a couple of offs on Red lane to forfeit the lead I had held by the skin of my teeth for the previous 6 brackets.

I need to thank Neil for the loan of a Coupe body as I had completely forgotten it was a Coupe race

Neil’s little driver was very scared at first until he got used to the speed

Joe 148
Neil 147 (1.047 sec ahead)
Darryl 147

James set the fastest time of 5.64 on Purple

F1

Race 1 comprised Brad, Joe, Neil and Matthew.

Joe’s car was a missile and he led all the way to win on 159 laps with Brad giving close chase 2 laps down followed by Matthew and Neil.

Race 2 comprised Darryl, James and myself.

Well again James and I tussled away with the same result of James finishing in front on 159 (same as Joe) followed by me on 157 (same as Brad) whilst Darryl was off the pace a little.

It was down to the Bell Lap times to see the final podium here with only 2 laps between 1st and 4th – close racing indeed.

Mark 157 (2.164 secs ahead)
Brad 157

Neil 145

Joe set fastest time of 5.716 on Blue and was the only driver to beat the 6 sec mark on all lanes – very fast.

I love doing some analysis when I am bored so I have put together the following which is based on the races attended – it’s interesting to see some distinct differences between BTR and STR performances for some racers.

Congratulations to all the competitors for keeping the great series going, and to the podium winners.
Thank you Mark for keeping us informed with great photo's and reports, and to James for providing the best slot car facility in Sydney.
Merry Christmas, and please keep safe over the festive season.
:)

Yes my driver did get motion sickness being thrown around on top of your sled. But maybe he picked up some speed tips as well. I felt sure that after running your power pink bodies for so long, you would forget you were driving a pretty blue Lola. If you did lose it, it was not noticed.
Pity there was no concourse on the night, you might have won your first concourse trophy!
Along with everyone else thanks for your reports and pics throughout the year. I particularly enjoyed the Fox Files on chassis building. I might warm up the iron over Christmas and steal some of your ideas.
Cheers to all the Retro racers, enjoy Christmas and see you at the ADC.
Neil

We are definitely lucky to have James in our hobby/sport; a track owner that is a very keen racer and so provides the best arena for us to compete.

James and I have known and raced against each other off and on for 47 years (since 1969 when we first met/clashed at the Slot Track in Rushcutters Bay Bowling Alley) and we are as keen now as we were then.
