Re: Need stuff built?
Can anyone build me some strap cans
Re: Need stuff built?
Hardest thing is getting the mags . Probably best to see Peter at Mobile

Re: Need stuff built?
Mags are easy for me Im testing 10 segment Neo mags that i get made for me but the hardest for me is the can who is HSC ?
I drag race only so HSC is forigne to me and getting mags made from any mag material is a peice of cake its the amount that matters

Re: Need stuff built?
i think Stuart Bach did some testing with neo mag strap motors some years ago.
dont think he's on this board though.

hay chadley where the bloody hell were you a few weeks ago I thought you called me out and was going to race me in melbourne
Re: Need stuff built?
Hey !!,..HSC,..is 'Hornsby Slot cars,..in James Lane Waitara, a link is avilable from the Main Board index, down the bottom of the Page.
I am sure if you spoke with Wayne Bramble, he could head you in the right direction, or perhaps help with what you need.
One would have to think that any suitable Neo based matrix would be Ideal for Drag Racing, as their 'Potential' at Standstill,..Cold, would be awesome.
Are you having them Made Locally ??
I had some Neo/Iron/Boron matrix magnets made here some years ago for use in what Was Group20,..they were beautifully made and correctly Radially Charged.
I would imagine someone could Make some suitable Strap style Cans here,...Not like it's Rocket Science !!,..lol
MY question, is Why you have gone with segmented Magnets??? Are you running them 'In Effect' as a Solid magnet or do you have Spaces between the segments?

Re: Need stuff built?
stoo mainly for a big bottom and middle end power and geared right can give a great mph finnish.
No not getting made locally . So your saying that you got some made locally here in Sydney so in
saying that you know someone here in Australia who has a machine that can zap cobolt and neo magnets
is this true stoo ?

Re: Need stuff built?
Yes,...BUT,..I am having difficulty finding them..... it Was quite a while ago now,..
The Guy I dealt with, was based in Wollongong or Kembla from memory, and I think I got the 'info from Hitachi metals I think.
He was also one of the few people I spoke to who Really knew what he was on about.
Their machine was one of the Only machines currently in Australia at the time that could properly Saturate Cobalt etc,..
TRUST Me,..If and When I find his contact details again,..I WILL Let people know.
Unfortunately,..the guy who did the machining for me, is No Longer where he was and I don't doubt may no longer be in business, or With us,..as he Was quite old at the time,..but I Will endeavour to find the details
Cheers

Re: Need stuff built?
That sounds pretty cool stoo I like eccentric individuals who find it hard to think inside the box. I live at The Oaks so the gong is only 20 mins away and Boral has a Asphalt plant down port Kembla so I might be able to link something together
Re: Need stuff built?
Keith Wade in QLD has a magnet zapper that does Cobalt mags. Had to reverse the polarity on some Quad magnets of mine. Is it what you need to bring them to life?
The level 40 Neo mags i used for HO scale cars were totally flat. They werent curved to follow the face of the stack at all.

Re: Need stuff built?
Possibly,..but Keith Can't accurately apply an 'Orientation' as such to the magnetic material,..as far as I am aware.
Initial Charging of magnets, say like in Stepper Motor 'Ring' magnets, have Many poles as such applied next to each other in a radial fashion, which requires special tooling etc.
PLUS, the machine requires a LOT of Power to correctly 'Saturate' Neo/Iron/Boron matrix's etc, higher even than Samarium Cobalt, (I incorrectly stated the fact in my previous post).
The Power required in 'Oerdteds' for the various materials, is listed below;
Ferrite (Anisotropic)
1000 kA/m (12000 Oe)
Alnico
500 kA/m (6000 Oe)
Samarium Cobalt
2000 kA/m (24000 Oe)
Neodymium Iron Boron
3500 kA/m (40000 Oe)
So you can see the machine seriously needs to 'Kick Butt' Power wise.
There are only a couple of facilities in Australia with machines of that Magnitude!
Initial Charging of Magnets is Not the same as merely Re-Zapping Them.
Interestingly, when everyone mentions Neo magnets,..one Must realise as well, that we are speaking of an 'Alloy', Containing Neo Dymium amongst other Elements. In fact the Neo, can actually be Part of Other Contained Rare Earth Elements.
NeoDymium by itself, is Very Unstable, and is one of the Most Corrosive (Oxidisation) rare Earth materials, to the Point where if Left open to the atmosphere, would eventually Oxidise itself away !!!
Pure Neo dymium is usually supplied with a Viscous Oil covering the Material, to avoid this Problem, so it's Use as a Pure Elemental Item is in fact Quite rare.
Certain Alloys of Neo have actually been with us for a very Long Time and have been used as 'Lighter Flints' for Years !!!
See Here; http://periodic.lanl.gov/elements/60.html
All of the Neo magnets we have been using are some Alloy, often containing Nickel etc.
The Neo/Iron/Boron matrix we used, was formed in a Process similar to how they Form 'Shot', by being Dropped when Molten inside a Tower, onto a Spinning Plate.
The Material, them Builds as a Homogenous Matrix, allowing the Crystaline Platelettes to Align themselves in a Unique, 'Stress' Free fashion, allowing for high Natural Anisotropy, amongst other characteristics.
I Purchased a length of rectangular Bar, that we then had Machined so as to be a Perfect Fit in the Koford Feather cans we were using.
These were then Cut to an appropriate Length and sent away for Charging.
We then Hand Shaped the resulting Magnetic 'Blocks' to the desired 'Test' Profiles we wished to Try.
It was Kind of Weird having a Singular 'Chunk' of stuff that you could Slide into the can,..as One Homogenous Piece !!!
I'll Take some Pics of The Motors we ran,..you might find it Interesting if Nothing else.
Everyone else was running Tiny Strap Can style Magnets at the Time and Fox, Hutcho and Myself figured that was Just Completely Wrong and considering Group 20's were in effect at a weight dis-advantage at the time Anyway,..we figured the Increase in Power and Torque, would be Worth the Weight Penalty,..AND,..We Were Right !!!,..ROFL
We regularly ran 11 tooth Pinions and I am sure Mark and I actuall Ran 12's at one stage,..when everyone else was running 9's and 10's and getting HOT,..You could Almost Put your Tongue on Our Motors !!!
Air Gap, Coverage, Flux Density and Field Return,..ALL Very Important !!,..LOL
Outcome in the Championship ???,..1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th !!!,..Guess they Worked eh!!??

Re: Need stuff built?
Stoo, i saw you making some comments on the MM arm issue on another board.
MM arms are tagged MM, not "group" (MM12 and MM20). They reffer to these arms as group arms on their site but they are not marketed to circuit racers because of the wind method used.
They are actually double winds but each stack is a single length of wire, with the middle wind (17th or 18th for 20's) looped over the commutator tab again.
These arms are marketed for drags only in the US because there is no main body for drag racing there. I'd like to see them market these arms as "group" arms for circuit racing.........the USRA would probably ban Proslot!
Coaltrain, sorry. Never intended to be at the nats this year and am not planning for the Springnats now either. Having some personal issues to deal with ATM.
Do you know where WSMCR have the 1000fter setup?

Re: Need stuff built?
Nice post really enjoyed it. I dont usually read every word but i did this time.
Is the grp20 you made nything like this.
and were the strap cans anything like this.
My Neo mags for the strap cans are shaped especially to follow the arch of the stack of the arm and
they are N48 Grade not N40 so it will be interesting to see how they go against the single's that are
doubled up and on there own that are heaps heavier than the straps and the thin & thick c-can mags
are N45,N48 & N50 Grade.
This is one of my AA/FC with a ProSlot strap grp7 motor in it.
and this is how my Single mag Neo shortened c-can motor went
Both ran in the .4's but hay the Neo motor car went quicker than the cobolt and you said your neo grp20's
went 1st,2nd,3rd & 4th well if thats not saying something.
Yes Chadly but it is buy invite only atm good luck with your personal issues hope you sort them out

Re: Need stuff built?
cool.
My personal best with one of my own homemade, Al rail, chassis' is 99.6mph.
I won the 2006 springnats at WSMCR and held the record at my WA strip at .580 with one of my own design group 20 wire chassis'.
You may be able to use the neo traction magnets sold by professor motor as magnets for those motors. Loadsome industries in WA carried magnets like that too. Not sure what level they are though! They were only 20-50 cents each.
